What is a gate valve?

A gate valve is the most common valve in a water supply system. It represents a linear motion isolation valve that has the function of stopping or allowing flow. A gate valve gets its name from the closing element that slides into the flow to provide a shut-off function, thus acting as a gate. Gate valves are used to isolate specific areas of the water supply network during maintenance, repair work, and new installations, and to reroute the flow of water throughout the pipeline.

What is a gate valve used for?

Industrial applications such as power generation, mining and chemical industries use this valve. Useful because the design limits flow barriers. In addition, there is a minimal pressure drop. The valve can also be used when pressure needs to be adjusted or line pressure relieved.

Gate valve manufacturing parts

Body
The valve body contains all the necessary parts to make it work. The most commonly used materials for bodywork are forged steel and cast steel
seat
The valve seat is responsible for the movement of the valve gate. It can also help further seal flowing media. For gate valves, there are two seats, depending on the type of gate. Take the wedge valve as an example, the valve seat is located on both sides of the gate.
Door
Regardless of its design, the gate acts as the primary seal for the gate valve.
Dry
The stem is as important as the valve. The combination of rotation of the stem and handle raises and lowers the gate.
cap
The bonnet serves to protect and seal certain parts of the gate valve.
Actuator
Actuators are only present in manually operated gate valves. It includes the actual turning of the handwheel to open or close the valve.

How do gate valves work?

The mechanism of the valve mainly works like this. The rotation of the gate valve handwheel also drives the valve stem to rotate. This in turn moves the door device up or down through the threads attached to the door.
Compared to ball valves, gate valves require many turns to fully open. This valve is not suitable for throttling or control as partial opening will damage the gate and seat wear. In addition, partial valve closure can generate vibrations. As a result, these vibrations cause wear on the door mechanism.

Why choose a gate valve?

easy to maintain
Maintenance and cleaning are easier thanks to bolts, nuts and screws. Therefore, it is easier to remove from the pipe.
For thicker media
This type of valve is more flexible because its gate can be moved up or down without obstruction of fluid or gas flow, thus ensuring less friction.
Availability of larger sizes
There are 3 inch valve diameters on the market. Since most customers are from industrial applications, larger sizes are almost always used.
cost effective
It lasts longer. Valves are less likely to be replaced during normal use. Also, as mentioned above, bolts make inspection and maintenance easier.

Considerations when buying gate valves

Where will it be used?

By understanding the valve's application, you can narrow down the exact type of valve to use. Will it restrict the flow of media? Will it regulate the amount of liquid or gas passing through the valve?

What type of media will pass through the valve?

Certain valves are better suited for high pressure or high temperature. Others are better at lower stress. Is the medium liquid or gas? Is it corrosive? Is it pure gas, liquid or mixture? Every valve is different and every valve is specially designed. The service life of the valve can be extended by following the suitability of the medium.

What is the size of the valve required?

Valves come in different sizes. Knowing the correct valve size can prevent buying a valve that doesn't actually fit the pipe. Factors such as medium temperature, pressure, and medium flow rate determine valve size.
Taking pressure into account means reducing the chance of leaks and increasing valve efficiency. In addition, temperature also plays a key role in the correct selection of valves.
Also important is the temperature of the surrounding area, the maximum that the medium and valve can withstand without leaking.

What is the preferred installation method?

Since the topic of mounting patterns is later in this guide, please note that mounting can be done with bolts, nuts, screwing in, or welding. Each of these has its advantages and disadvantages. Some valves are easy to clean due to the way they are installed, while others require the entire valve to be replaced.

What materials are used?

Pressure affects the materials used in this valve. At Youyi, we manufacture and offer two material options:
cast steel
This is the most common material used in large pipelines for oil and gas drilling and pipelines. Therefore, valve diameters can range from 2 inches to 80 inches wide. Cast steel valves meet API 600 and API 603.
forged steel
This type of valve is more commonly found on pipes requiring less than 2 inches in diameter. Specifications include API 603 and BS 5352.

Stem Design Type

Stem classification depends on the threaded end.
rising
Door and stem are connected. Additionally, threads on the drive side lower and raise the stem. Due to the design, this is more suitable for manual movement.
non-ascending
Typically used in underground applications, the non-rising stem threaded the actuator to the gate

Seat Design Type

Seat types are classified according to the material used and the amount of pressure the seat can withstand.
flexible sitting
The resilient seated door is made of high-grade rubber. It has a simple valve bottom that allows impurities to pass through. For this reason, the rubber seat traps impurities until the next time the valve is opened.
Metal seat type
In order for a metal seat valve to close completely, there should be a depression in the bottom of the valve. However, the impurity-laden medium remains in the recesses. Thereby reducing the sealing ability of the metal valve. In this case, proper cleaning and maintenance is recommended from time to time. Metal seats are often used for high pressure and high temperature media.

Types of Gate Valves by Bonnet Design

Screw-in bonnet
As the name suggests, screws attach the bonnet to the valve. Gate valve manufacturers use it for small valves. This is the simplest yet durable leak seal.
Combined Bonnet Type
Union bonnets use union nuts to provide a leak-tight seal to the valve. This is typically used in applications that require frequent maintenance because the bolts will not deteriorate over time regardless of how often the bonnet is removed.
Bolted Bonnet Type
Most common in large valves and valves handling high pressure.
Pressure Seal Bonnet Type
For applications over 15MPa, pressure valve caps are suitable as they utilize internal pressure to seal. As the internal pressure increases, a downward facing cup pushes against the valve cap, increasing the seal.

Gate and Ball Valves

While these two are part of the on/off assortment, there are some differences in the design of the two. The ball of the ball valve can be turned a quarter so the medium can flow. On the other hand, the gate valve vertically lifts or pushes the gate device through the rotation of the handwheel. Due to the gate design, gate valves have less chance of leakage than ball valves.

Gate valves have the following advantages:

Flow resistance The flow channel in the gate valve body is straight, and the fluid does not change direction when it flows through the gate valve, so the flow resistance is small.
The face-to-face dimension (the distance between the two ends of the connecting pipe) is small. Since the gate is disc-shaped and placed vertically in the valve body, and the disc of the globe valve (also disc-shaped) is placed in parallel in the valve body, the length of the gate valve facing the end face is smaller than that of the globe valve. For example, the length of the CL150 DN150 globe valve is 406mm, while the length of the gate valve with the same parameters is only 229mm.
Low labor cost to open and close. When opening and closing, the movement direction of the gate is perpendicular to the fluid flow direction, while the movement direction of the globe valve disc is usually opposite to the medium flow direction when closing, so the globe valve needs to overcome the force of the medium. Therefore, gate valves are much easier to open and close than globe valves.
The direction of fluid flow is not restricted. Fluid can flow through the gate valve in any direction from both sides of the gate valve, and it can also function as a switch. Gate valves are easy to set up and are suitable for pipes where fluid flow may change.
When fully opened, the sealing surface is slightly eroded by the working medium.
The body structure is relatively simple and the manufacturing process is better.
