How Gate Valves Work

Gate valves are designed for fully open and/or fully closed service. They act as isolation valves because their only function is to stop or allow flow through. It allows minimal dirt to enter the pipeline. Gate valves have two main parts, they are parallel and wedge shaped. For the parallel shape, it is a flat gate valve with 2 parallel seats and a sharp edge at the bottom. Wedge shaped valves have 2 angled seats, but the gate often does not match.

There are 3 types of gate valves: solid conical wedge, resilient wedge, and split wedge or parallel disc valves. The solid tape wedge is the most common. Due to its simplicity and strength, it can be installed in any position. It is suitable for all types of fluids, but this design does have some leakage. The flexible wedge is a solid disc with a cutout perimeter that facilitates hot binding. It has better seat alignment to help prevent leaks and is used primarily in steam systems. The split wedge has 2 discs and is held together by a special mechanism that allows the unaligned disc to adjust back into place while the other disc supports everything. Parallel discs have 2 spring loaded discs.

The material of the valve is important because it needs to withstand the conditions to which it will be exposed. For example, suppose the valve will be used in an acidic environment. In this case, you need to choose a valve made of acid-resistant material. The size of the valve is also important. It helps if you make sure the valve is large enough to handle the flow rate of the fluid it will control. The pressure rating of the valve is another important factor to consider. It is best to make sure the valve can withstand the pressure of the fluid it will control. The temperature rating of the valve is also important. It is best to make sure that the valve can withstand the temperature of the fluid it will be controlling.
